How Lab Testing Works
All laboratory testing for peptide therapy is ordered at the clinical discretion of Dr. Nancy Ferrel, MD, your prescribing physician and Medical Director of Optimal Well MD. The specific panels appropriate for your protocol — and how often they are repeated — are determined by Dr. Ferrel based on your individual history, presentation, and the peptides being prescribed. There is no one-size-fits-all panel.
Standard medical labs ordered through LabCorp are billed by LabCorp directly to you or your insurance. Optimal Well MD does not coordinate with insurance carriers, verify lab coverage, or answer billing questions related to LabCorp or any other outside lab. You are welcome to use your health insurance with LabCorp; please contact LabCorp and your insurance carrier directly with any billing or coverage questions.
Specialty hormone testing is billed through our practice and is ordered only when Dr. Ferrel determines a level of testing beyond LabCorp is clinically necessary. See Specialized Hormone Testing below for pricing.

Peptide therapy has become one of the most discussed topics on social media, in podcasts, on YouTube, and across AI-generated content. Patients arrive every week with screenshots of protocols, lab "checklists," dosing schedules, and influencer recommendations — much of which is incomplete, inaccurate, or simply not appropriate for the individual in front of us.
We understand the impulse. Patients want to be informed and engaged in their own care, and that is a good thing. But peptide therapy is a regulated medical protocol, not a consumer wellness trend. The depth of clinical analysis that goes into ordering the right test for the right patient at the right time cannot be reduced to a list circulating on the internet.

Optimal Well MD is a personalized medical practice. Dr. Ferrel's clinical time and judgment are dedicated to scheduled visits and the patients formally enrolled in her concierge program.
The patient portal is intended for administrative use only — appointment requests, prescription refill requests, and routine practice communication. The portal is not a substitute for a clinical visit and is not the appropriate channel for new symptoms, complex questions about your protocol, dosing concerns, or anything requiring Dr. Ferrel's clinical judgment.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911. For urgent clinical concerns outside of business hours, please contact your primary care provider or visit your nearest emergency department. Optimal Well MD does not provide 24/7 on-call coverage outside of the Concierge Membership tier.
Why can't I message Dr. Ferrel through the patient portal anymore?
Direct clinical messaging with Dr. Ferrel is a benefit of our Concierge Membership program (starting at $995/month). For patients outside of the concierge tier, the patient portal is reserved for administrative use — scheduling, refill requests, and routine practice communication. Clinical questions about your protocol, symptoms, dosing, or labs require a scheduled visit. This policy ensures that every patient receives Dr. Ferrel's full clinical attention in a structured visit, rather than fragmented messages that cannot capture the full picture safely.
Why is ongoing lab monitoring part of peptide therapy?
Peptide therapy is an ongoing medical protocol, and Dr. Ferrel's responsibility as your prescribing physician is to monitor your response to therapy and adjust your protocol based on objective data. The cadence and depth of that monitoring is determined by Dr. Ferrel based on your individual clinical picture — there is no one-size-fits-all schedule.
What does LabCorp typically cost out-of-pocket — and can I use my insurance?
LabCorp pricing varies depending on which panels Dr. Ferrel determines are appropriate for your protocol. Once Dr. Ferrel places your order, our front desk will provide you with the specific tests being ordered so you can confirm pricing with LabCorp directly in advance of your draw. You are welcome to use your health insurance with LabCorp. Optimal Well MD does not verify lab coverage, coordinate with insurance carriers, or answer billing questions about LabCorp services — please contact LabCorp and your insurance carrier directly for any billing or coverage questions.
Why do some patients need specialty hormone testing and others don't?
All laboratory testing decisions — including whether specialty hormone testing is appropriate — are made by Dr. Ferrel based on your individual protocol, symptoms, and clinical presentation. Most peptide-only patients will not require specialty hormone panels, but Dr. Ferrel may recommend this level of testing where clinically indicated.
What happens if I decline labs?
Patients have the right to decline laboratory testing. Optimal Well MD has a corresponding obligation to discontinue therapy when continued prescribing would fall below the standard of care. If you decline labs, we will provide a one-time 60-day extension with a signed acknowledgment, after which therapy will be discontinued if labs are not completed. This policy protects your health and is non-negotiable.
Can I use my own primary care provider for labs?
No. Dr. Ferrel's protocols are proprietary clinical work product developed within her independent private practice and informed by more than two decades of specialty training in Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine. Optimal Well MD does not coordinate with outside primary care providers, accept outside lab orders in lieu of our own, or interpret labs ordered by another physician for the purpose of managing your peptide protocol. All laboratory testing supporting your care at Optimal Well MD is ordered, reviewed, and acted upon by Dr. Ferrel personally to ensure clinical consistency, appropriate physician oversight, and the integrity of your protocol.
